dc.description.abstractEl Tribunal del Santo Oficio se instaura en Nueva España como un órgano vigilante y defensor de la fe católica y las buenas costumbres, a diferencia de su funcionamiento en Europa, el tribunal en América dejó fuera de su jurisdicción a los indios, los que quedaron bajo la protección de la jurisdicción eclesiástica como nuevos cristianos. En los asuntos atendidos durante el virreinato el Santo Oficio persiguió mayormente herejías, apostasías, blasfemias, hechizos y supersticiones, siendo muy frecuente las denuncias en contra de curanderas supersticiosas. Aunque deplorado por la población al final del periodo colonial, lo cierto es que el tribunal de la fe en México impuso sanciones mesuradas atendiendo a la punibilidad aplicada en la jurisdicción criminal.es_MX

dc.description.abstractEnglishThe Court of the Holy Office is established in New Spain as a vigilant body and defender of the Catholic faith and good customs, unlike its operation in Europe, the court in America left the Indians out of its jurisdiction, those who were left under the protection of ecclesiastical jurisdiction as new Christians. In matters handled during the viceroyalty, the Holy Office mainly prosecuted heresies, apostasies, blasphemies, spells, and superstitions, with complaints against superstitious healers being very frequent. Although deplored by the population at the end of the colonial period, the truth is that the court of faith in Mexico imposed measured sanctions based on the punishability applied in the criminal jurisdiction.en
